RIP SilverJet

From this:

To this:

...in just one month.

In late-April, SilverJet was highly commended at the Travolution Awards for its FlySilverjet.com website in the Best Airline Website category (pipped to the post by BA.com). SilverJet won the award in 2007.

The airline operated its last flight this morning.

Like its recently deceased rivals, EOS and MaxJet, most people agree it was a wonderful concept.

Many passengers and most of the journalists who flew with the airline had nothing but praise for the quality of service.

However, investors and some elements in the city were less impressed.

Tough times for all airlines...

Getting it right with Mr and Mrs Right

Case Study time at the TFM&A conference in London today. And travel is an obvious area where CRM can work wonders.

Customers tend to book their holidays at the same time of year, each year, according to TUI Travel, with January and June still the twin peaks in the cycle.

Its e-CRM manager Louise Kendall says Thomson – still the UK's biggest holiday brand – is using this business-wide finding to timetable campaigns targeted as previous bookers.

Customer retention is becoming increasingly important for travel businesses, as promiscuous consumers put it about, loving and leaving suppliers because there are so many seats and beds around.

So, why should someone settle for Mr/Mrs Right now, when we're confident that Mr/Mrs Right will always come along?

Thomson will email you a year after your booking, gently reminding you that they are still around and interested, if you are.

A week later, there will be a more determined approach - emotional blackmail might be a bit strong, but there is an attempt to pull on our heart strings – if not purse strings – by featuring images and videos, reminding us of that great time we had together last year, and how easy it would be for that to happen it again…

Personalization of emails is nothing new - it is doubtful that there are any online travel businesses sending out the same email to its entire database.

Mark Brennan, MD of Thomson's email partner CreatorMail makes the distinction between a generic email blast and an e-trading platform – once email products are instilled into the fabric of an organisation and resources made available, you can create an emotional bond with the recipient, turning the email into a cost-effective marketing device, rather than a trash-can item waiting to happen.

[NB: TFM&A has obviously done its research in this area. CreatorMail won a Travolution Award in 2007 for its work with Thomson - Ed]

You don’t have to be a global brand to reach for the Holy Grail

Our latest column in Travel Weekly:

The Travolution team had the pleasure of hearing Dara Khosrowshahi, chief executive of Expedia, speak at a conference in Florida last week.

Khosrowshahi faces similar problems to bosses of other travel companies: changing consumer behaviour, economic pressures, and competition at every turn – but just on a global scale.

Although Expedia’s 11 years in operation have given it the opportunity for first mover advantage in so many areas, it still grapples with what is still the Holy Grail of online travel: replicating the role of the traditional travel agency.

The online world, Khosrowshahi says, still needs to find a way of mirroring the interaction and knowledge a user might experience when they talk to an agent.

This probably doesn’t keep Khosrowshahi awake at night, but it remains a problem for online travel agencies as they attempt to woo the offline refuseniks to the Internet.

Expedia in the UK won a Travolution award earlier this year for a number of reasons, but its Inspirator tool played a major part. A section on its website narrows down ideas for holidays by combining simple preferences such as type (beach, culture, nightlife) with location and length of stay.

Khosrowshahi probably knows this isn’t enough. He offers three tips for online: use e-mail and customer relationship management better; segment users so offers and products can be targeted better; and improve online search.

Most people will realise all of these ideas use data and user preferences to a huge degree.

But while few online travel firms will have the budget to implement this strategy, fewer will have to worry about the requirements of a global brand.

Good CRM and customer segmentation should not be beyond the capabilities of most travel firms – and, with emerging technology around the corner, intelligent search will follow soon.

Avis and its blogging strategy

Interesting interview on E-Consultancy with Xavier Vallee, UK head of marketing for car hire giant Avis, about the WeTryHarder blog.

Vallee goes into a fair amount of detail about why the company launched a blog, its policy on comment moderation ("We don't filter negative comments - just spam" - which is encouraging, if its true 100% of the time), and costs.

The WeTryHarder blog was shortlisted at the Travolution Awards 2007 in the Best Use of Social Media category. It was eventually beaten by the STA Travel Travel Blogs.

Full interview with Vallee here.

Time to pull instead of push

Another guest blogger: Caroline Worboys, chief executive of Broadsystem, on why travel is failing to get email marketing right.

In 2006 over 4 billion marketing emails were sent to consumers, requesting their attention and inviting their custom. That works out at about 70 marketing emails for every man, woman, and child in the UK!

Yet, with such large volumes of marketing emails being sent, a figure which is almost certain to continue to rise, I’m not exactly convinced that the medium is still being used to its full potential.

Messages promoting airliner deals, hotel offers, and holiday packages play an essential role in driving profits but why isn’t it commonplace to receive a post-holiday email thanking you for your business, perhaps asking for feedback, or inviting you to share your experiences, photos, even video clips with the supplier?

Thomson is one company that are beginning to appreciate the power of user generated content. [Thomson and CreatorMail won a Travolution Award in April for their efforts - Ed]

The news last month that sites such as TripAdvisor are trusted more by consumers than agents, brochures, and recommendations from friends just goes to so how important the consumer is in any business relationship.

When done well, email has such a unique ability to engage its recipients with a tailored and personal message, creating a two way dialogue. But this opportunity is being largely missed; instead ‘push’ messages continue to be the norm.

This is most certainly missing a trick. Whilst marketing email volumes grow, opening rates are starting to falter. To benefit fully from this medium, it is time to get personal.

Carry On SilverJet

Not that we would ever accuse the recipient of a Travolution Award of lowering the tone of its online advertising, but here is new viral ad from SilverJet, winners of our Best Airline Website category:

Naked ambition

Some very pleasing feedback from both our events on Tuesday.

However, this one stood out:

Dear Kevin,

Thanks for a great night last night!

I am so impressed that you posted the winners at 01.10. But in doing that you missed a totally naked lady walking around the street! I was outside chatting with ****** from ****** and she walked past completely starkers like she was out for a casual stroll! Bizarre!
We have been assured this was not a reveller from the awards. And, despite our attendees supposedly being tech-savvy, nobody managed to capture the incident with their mobile phone cameras. Not exactly Best Use of Technology, we would argue...
