Full list of Ryanair 'scrapers'

Fantastic and intriguing letter from Ryanair to the European Commission has just been published on the Ryanair website.

Not only does it outline in detail the carrier's concerns over third party sites but also gives a complete list of sites which have been on the receiving end of a cease and desist letter from Ryanair.

[Our story from today]

It's very confusing (cheapflights is included, for example, but is clearly a media site although it is potentially picking up Ryanair flights through its advertisers) but is basically a who's who of the online travel industry in Europe.

The reason you will not see any Expedia-owned sites is - we suspect - because of the deal Ryanair currently has the online travel agency.

The companies without domain extensions are travel technology companies, such as Dolphin Dynamics.

It's long, but worth reproducing.

I was hoping the 'Thompson' misspell was Ryanair being extremely sloppy, but alas it's just Travolution...

Pete: Damn those PDF scrapers. :-) Thanks for pointing it out. Corrected.

In the meantime, given your position at Thomson, perhaps you would also be willing to share your opinion on Ryanair's naming and shaming of Thomson as one the dreaded 'scrapers'?

Strange to see flyTUI and Thomsonfly on here. . . I was just wondering if this was instead of screen scraping for re-selling, screen scraping to monitor their prices ?

Travolution Blogger said...

James: I suspect it is a combination of all of these points you mentioned.

Thanks for correctly pointing out that Cheapflights is indeed a media company that publishes flight deals. As such we do not screen scrape but have contractual agreements with all our advertisers who range from major airlines, low cost carriers, OTAs and the long tail of high street and specialist agencies, some of whom have no online presence. Ryan Air is not one of them.

Thanks for the link to my blog!

There are some interesting points being raised on the Is Screen Scraping ethical debate over on my blog.....

So far the consensus is that it isn't

At some point we expected the official responses would start coming in.

Email from lastminute.com just arrived:

"For the record, lastminute.com/ travelocity do not screenscrap Ryanair."

So there...

Another one:

Skyscanner has pointed us to their recent news story about the issue.

Here.

They are somewhat perplexed as to why they have been included on the list given the comments from the Ryanair official mentioned in the story and correspondence from Ryanair's legal team.

They will also continue with their existing Ryanair searches.

Hi Kevin,

The link you've posted there is actually to a slightly older story.

Today we published a new statement in response to Ryanair's letter to the EC.

You can read this here: http://news.skyscanner.net/articles/2008/08/000550-skyscanner-and-ryanair-the-cease-and-desist-situation-clarified.html

The gist of our statement, is that, yes - Skyscanner were issued a cease and desist order, but this was several months ago, and Ryanair has since approved us to show their flights, seeing as we don’t act as middlemen, but send users directly to Ryanair’s website to book their flights.

Ryanair spokesman, Stephen McNamara, has also publicly stated that Skyscanner is okay to use, and said Ryanair does not have a problem with the site.

thanks

Skyscanner

We (at WhichBudget.com) received a 'cease and desist' letter from Ryanair back in January 2008 and have since cleared the issue with Ryanair, since we do not and never did scrape their website. We do feature their routes, but these are manually added to our database.

Hence, regarding Cheapflights and Lastminute comments: guys, join the club ... Ryanair seems to be after everyone even just using the word Ryanair on their website.

Ha ha, why not include google.com in the list. What is a search engine if its not a 'screen scraper'.

I guess the difference is how the data is used. Allowing your visitors to book ryanair flights through a 3rd party is wrong, but for 'flight comparison' (where you click through to book with rynair) I cant see the problem. Thats just a search engine.

My name is Simon Air, my girlfriend is about to give birth to a baby boy who we have decided to call Ryan - hope this ridiculous airline don't get in touch and get me to change my son's name! ha ha - up yours Ryanair!

Why would booking.com scrap Ryanair's website? They don't deal with air business...
