Tapping into the Long Tail of US airports

Apparently, 70% of air journeys in the US pass through just 30 airports, leaving the other 5,400-odd airports to scratch around for the remaining bits of private and commercial air business.

So, interesting to see the UK PR push this week for Jetcombo.com, a recently launched online travel agency which builds trips for people using a combination of scheduled and private airlines.

The site aggregates and then sells tickets using data from commercial airlines and other carriers who fly into any of landing strips across the US. This can include thousands of operators of small jets or four-seater aircraft that serve rural areas.

Random fact: 98% of the US population lives within 20 miles of an airport.

The site also has every airport in the UK listed, but doesn't appear to be mining any of the private flights available.

Yet...

Interesting concept and one which should work in the US, given the size of the country.

It's being backed by reasonably heavyweight people. Co-founder Michael Thomas launched OneTravel.com, Fare.Net (now Sprice.com) and BookingWiz.com, before turning his attention to JetCombo.
